- In 1989, the Ministry of Education, Govt of India established the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET) in honor of the revered saint, Sant Harchand Singh Longowal, and was formally inaugurated in 1991.
- SLIET is an autonomous institution, fully funded by the Government of India, and governed by the SLIET society.It is recognized by AICTE, New Delhi, and holds the status of Deemed to be University.
- Today, SLIET is esteemed alongside NITs, IIMs, Central Universities, and other CFTIs.

- The Central Library, housed in a modern building, offers various facilities for students and has a collection of resources.
- The collection includes 113,214 items, such as 79,613 central library books, 10,582 departmental books, and 4,274 books specifically for SC/ST students.
- Additionally, there are 15,180 books available in the book bank, 3,565 books under TEQIP, and 1,088 e-books.
- The library also holds 1,324 MTech theses, 339 PhD theses, 91 periodicals, and magazines.

Hostel
- SLIET offers 9 boys’ hostels, each with a capacity of 235 students, while there are 4 girls’ hostels, accommodating 230 students each.
- Additionally, there is a PG hostel for both boys and girls, with capacities of 80 and 81 students respectively.
- For certificate and diploma students, five three-seater boys’ hostels are allocated.First-year degree students are accommodated in one-seater boys’ hostels, while prefinal and final year degree students are allocated two single-seater hostels.
- Facilities provided include internet access, indoor games, reading rooms, visitor rooms, guest rooms for parents, TV rooms, mess/canteen services, geysers, water coolers, gymnasiums, and libraries.

- The sports section aims to nurture talented student-athletes by providing comprehensive training facilities.
- Includes A 400-meter cinder track in the stadium for running, Two cemented, flood-lit basketball courts, Two cemented badminton courts and two indoor courts with synthetic mats, Two concrete, flood-lit lawn tennis courts, Three flood-lit volleyball courts, One handball ground and a cricket ground, One football ground, A 25-meter swimming pool, and facilities for Kho-Kho.
